Arrr, ye scurvy WhatsApp be tryin' out a grand new trick - self-destructin' voice messages, mateys!
2023-10-19
Arr, me hearties! The latest security beta o' WhatsApp be stoppin' landlubbers from savin' or sharin' those fleetin' messages with others. No more leakin' secrets, ye scurvy dogs!
WhatsApp is testing a new View Once mode for voice messages, adding an extra layer of privacy to the mobile app. This feature is similar to the disappearing images and videos already available on the platform. When recording a voice note with the lock on, a new icon with the number one will appear in the chat bar. Tapping this icon enables the View Once mode, preventing recipients from exporting, forwarding, saving, or recording the message. Once the message is sent, it cannot be listened to again by either the sender or the receiver. This new feature has the potential to eliminate the risk of personal or sensitive information falling into the wrong hands, as messages cannot be shared with people outside the initial chat room. The update is available for both Android and iOS users, with Android users being able to join the Google Play Beta Program and install the beta version of WhatsApp, and iPhone owners having the option to join the TestFlight program.
In terms of future updates, there are no other beta features as impactful or noteworthy as the self-destructing voice messages. The platform has seen multiple major updates throughout 2023, from quality-of-life changes to eight-person video calls on the Windows desktop app. Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, may be keeping its projects under wraps for a big launch in 2024.
