Arrr, ye scurvy dog Kareem Jackson o' the Denver Broncos be facin' a four-game suspension for his repeated violations o' the NFL's unnecessary roughness rules! But by Davy Jones' locker, thar be some mercy from the league, as they reduced it to a mere two games after the lad's appeal! Yo ho ho!
A four-game suspension for Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson has been reduced to two games, as announced by the NFL on Tuesday. The suspension was initially imposed by NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan, following Jackson's ejection from Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers for a hit on rookie tight end Luke Musgrave. Derrick Brooks, an appeals officer, reduced the suspension after Jackson appealed against repeated violations of the league's unnecessary roughness rules.During the play in question, Jackson made helmet-to-helmet contact with Musgrave as the latter caught a pass and turned around. Musgrave's head violently snapped back due to the forceful blow. Runyan's statement highlighted that Jackson had the time and space to avoid such contact and could have made contact within the rules but chose not to.
Alternative replay angles showed that Jackson made direct contact with Musgrave's facemask. The NFL cited Jackson as a repeat offender, referencing a rule that states it is a foul if a player forcibly hits a defenseless player's head or neck area with various body parts, regardless of initial contact location or whether the player uses their arms to tackle.
Earlier this season, Jackson was ejected for a hit that resulted in a head injury to tight end Logan Thomas. He was also flagged for unnecessary roughness in Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite these incidents, the league chose not to suspend him.
Jackson, who was drafted in the first round in 2010, has spent the majority of his career with the Houston Texans before joining the Broncos. Delarrin Turner-Yell is expected to take over the starting safety duties in Jackson's absence. Broncos head coach Sean Payton expressed his belief that Jackson is a player who strives to "do the right thing."
