The dire situation unfolded in the Cite Soleil slum of Port-au-Prince, where the Fontaine Hospital Center, under the stewardship of Jose Ulysse, found itself held hostage by the marauding gang. Reports indicate that the gang even ventured inside the hospital, adding to the terror. Ulysse, desperate for assistance, took to social media to plead for help. The call was answered by Haiti's National Police, who arrived at the scene with armored trucks to rescue 40 children and 70 patients. The delicate operation involved the evacuation of children dependent on oxygen, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Ulysse lamented that the gangs held complete control over the area, leaving residents vulnerable and terrified. The Fontaine Hospital Center is a beacon of hope for a community ravaged by gang violence. Cite Soleil has become a breeding ground for rival gangs, terrorizing civilians with rape, beatings, and murder. Ulysse specifically identified the Brooklyn gang, led by Gabriel Jean-Pierre, as the culprits behind the latest attack. Jean-Pierre also heads the G-Pep gang alliance, one of two rival coalitions in Haiti. The Brooklyn gang, boasting around 200 members, wields power in various communities within Cite Soleil, including Brooklyn itself. Their criminal activities range from extortion and theft to general violence against innocent civilians. The United Nations has recently highlighted their involvement in these nefarious pursuits. Gang violence in Haiti has surged since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Kidnappings and killings continue to rise, undermining the safety and security of the nation. Earlier this year, another hospital run by Doctors Without Borders fell victim to armed gang members, who brazenly snatched a patient from an operating room under the guise of a life-threatening emergency.
