2023-11-18

Arr, last Saturday be a pitiful plunder for Auburn! 'Twas meant to be a mere tune-up afore the grand Iron Bowl, but alas! Them Tigers were caught unawares, fallin' victim to a mighty upset - a blow of epic proportions!

In a surprising turn of events, the Auburn Tigers suffered a defeat at the hands of the New Mexico State Aggies, despite being favored to win by 25.5 points. This marked Auburn's first loss at home to a nonconference opponent since 2007. It was also the Aggies' first victory against an SEC school in their program's history.
The upset was the second-largest of the season based on point spread, falling just short of Texas State's win over Baylor. To add insult to injury, Auburn had paid New Mexico State $1.7 million for the game, a common practice between power-five and lower-level schools.
New Mexico State dominated the game, outscoring Auburn 21-3 in the second half and never relinquishing the lead after scoring a touchdown on their first drive. They outgained Auburn 414-213 and controlled the ball for nearly 39 minutes.
New Mexico State quarterback Diego Pavia had an impressive performance, completing 19 of 28 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns. The Aggies' victory extended their winning streak to seven games and secured them a spot in the C-USA title game.
It is speculated that Auburn may have been looking ahead to their upcoming Iron Bowl matchup against Alabama. Regardless of the reasons for the loss, it was undoubtedly a shocking defeat for the Tigers.
