Arr, me hearties! Meta be grantin' a wee band o' WhatsApp scurvy dogs the chance to forge their own AIs, each with a personality as rare as a mermaid's tail!
WhatsApp is offering select mobile users access to Meta's new AI-powered chat rooms. Meta announced during its Connect 2023 event that it was working on an "in-app assistant" for its platforms. The AI functions similarly to Bing Chat and can engage in light conversation and answer questions. Each AI persona is based on a famous celebrity and has a unique personality. For example, the Dungeon Master persona guides users through a choose-your-own-adventure game and features a video feed of rapper Snoop Dogg. The AI assistant is currently in beta, with iOS and Android users able to try it out. The update also places AI-powered conversations on the Chats tab for easy access. To use the AI assistant on Android, users must join the Google Play Beta Program and install the WhatsApp Beta app. Unfortunately, the WhatsApp Beta on iOS is closed. Once launched, users can tap the green Chat icon and select New AI chat. Users can choose from different AI personas and start a conversation. The AI assistant provides recommendations and links to relevant sources. If users want a specific personality, they can choose from various categories like sports, pop culture, and advice. Each persona comes with a celebrity emoting in real-time.
The AI conversations can be found in the main Chat tab on mobile or on WhatsApp for desktop. However, assistants can only be created on mobile. It's unknown if this feature will be widely available in the future. Meta plans to expand the AI personas to a wider audience.
