Ahoy mateys! WhatsApp be offerin' secret codes to shiver me timbers and safeguard yer private chats, arrr!

2023-11-30

Arrr, mateys! Ye be needin' secret codes to add a second layer o' privacy to yer locked chat quarters. 'Tis to keep 'em scurvy dogs with prying eyes at bay!

WhatsApp is introducing Secret Codes to enhance the security of its Chat Lock feature. Currently, Chat Lock allows users to place private conversations in a separate folder that can only be accessed with the phone's password or biometric login. However, it doesn't prevent someone who knows the password from viewing the chats. Secret Codes solves this issue by allowing users to create a second password that is separate from their phone's unlock password. When a Secret Code is created, the locked folder disappears from the inbox, adding an extra layer of privacy. To make the hidden chats reappear, the user needs to enter the Secret Code directly into the search bar on the main page. Users also have the option to keep the locked folder visible if they choose. WhatsApp has made it easier to lock chats by introducing a long-press feature.

To add a Secret Code, users need to go to Chat Lock Settings, activate Secret Code, and create a password. Interestingly, emojis can be used in the code alongside numbers, letters, and punctuation marks. The code must be four characters long or a single emoji. The update is currently only available for WhatsApp on mobile devices, with no information about whether it will be rolled out to desktop. The Secret Codes feature will be introduced globally in the coming months.

In addition to this update, WhatsApp has recently added the ability for its desktop app to send self-destructing photos and videos, as well as introduced AI assistants with unique "personalities" in a beta version. It seems that WhatsApp is continuously improving its features and expanding its capabilities.
