Avast ye scurvy dogs! 'Tis a grievous tale I tell ye. 'Twas found that a blunder in the tallying did occur whilst counting the doubloons fer the Dr Pepper sponsored scholarship at the Big 12 Championship betwixt Texas and Oklahoma State. Arr, aye, 'twas a mighty mishap indeed!
The Texas Longhorns kept their hopes of making it to the College Football Playoff alive by dominating Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship game. However, the real competition happened during halftime, when two college students competed in the annual Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway challenge. The challenge required contestants to get the most footballs inside a Dr Pepper-branded bin in a certain amount of time, with the winner receiving a $100,000 tuition scholarship. At the end of regulation, both contestants, Ryan Georgian from the University of Pennsylvania and Gavin White from Ohio State University, had each scored ten points. This meant that an overtime period was needed to determine a winner. Georgian made a shot in the final seconds of the overtime period, forcing a sudden-death round. He ultimately came out on top in the shootout period, but some fans cried foul.
A video review later revealed that Georgian had been given six points in the first period, one more point than he should have been given credit for. This extra point was enough to force overtime. Dr Pepper acknowledged the error and announced that both students would be awarded the $100,000 scholarship.
Some observers took to social media to comment on the situation, with some even taking credit for bringing attention to the discrepancy. Overall, it was a dramatic and humorous turn of events in the midst of an intense football game.
