Arrr, me hearties! Google's latest venture be a fine experiment, offerin' ye tools to edit like a landlubber, and settin' the mood to craft simple beats, ye scallywags!

Google has released its latest experimental AI called Instrument Playground, which allows users to generate 20-second music tracks with a single text prompt. This is similar to other companies' offerings, such as Meta's MusicGen. However, Google's version has two unique features. Firstly, it can emulate over 100 instruments from around the world, including common ones like the piano and more obscure ones like the dizi from China. Secondly, users can add an adjective to the prompt to give the generated track a certain mood, such as "Happy" for an upbeat track or "Merry" for a more Christmassy sound. Sound effects can also be implemented by choosing one of three modes: Ambient, Beat, and Pitch. The Advanced mode allows users to combine up to four different AI instruments into one song.
The Instrument Playground is publicly available, and users can try it out on the website. Users can choose from a variety of instruments and specify their preferences. The AI will generate a song based on the prompt, and users can use the on-screen keyboard to work on the track. The editing tools are rudimentary, but users can manipulate the track using the Ambient, Beat, and Pitch modes. After finishing the track, users can record an audio snippet and download it as a .wav file.
However, the AI is still experimental and has some flaws. Google intends to improve it and increase the number of supported instruments. Currently, it feels like a digital toy capable of creating simple beats. Nevertheless, it has potential and could be developed into a more advanced music-making tool in the future.
For those interested in music-making software, TechRadar has a list of the best free options available. Overall, Instrument Playground is a fun and creative tool, but it still has room for improvement.
