Arrr, me hearties! Look ye here, Meta be flauntin' a grand new contraption, a headset that be resemblin' the very melding of Meta Quest Pro and Apple Vision Pro! Aye, 'tis a sight to behold, me mateys!
Meta has showcased a promising XR headset that combines features from the Meta Quest Pro and Apple Vision Pro, along with some exclusive additions. However, the downside is that the release of a similar product is still years away. During a talk at the University of Arizona, Meta's director of display systems research revealed a render of the advanced prototype known as Mirror Lake, which incorporates design elements and features from the Quest Pro and Vision Pro. The headset also utilizes HoloCake lenses and electronic varifocal technology to provide a more natural and comfortable experience.HoloCake lenses enable the varifocal system while reducing the size of the headset. These lenses are thinner and flatter compared to the curved lenses used in traditional pancake systems. However, the use of lasers instead of regular LED backlighting may increase the cost, size, heat, and safety challenges. Nevertheless, lasers can offer a wider and more vivid range of colors.
Unfortunately, Mirror Lake is not expected to be available anytime soon. Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, suggested that the technology showcased in Mirror Lake could potentially be seen in products in the second half of the decade, indicating a potential release in 2026 or beyond. This aligns with the predicted launch timeframe for Meta's next XR headset, which could be teased in late 2025. Waiting a few years would also allow the Meta Quest 3 to shine before the next big release.
Meta may also observe the performance of Apple's Vision Pro headset, which offers high-end technology at a premium price. Depending on the success of Apple's headset, Meta may adjust its strategy and introduce a high-end Meta Quest Pro 2 that offers a significant upgrade over the Quest 3. Alternatively, if the Vision Pro fails, Meta would likely avoid following a similar approach.
