"Avast ye scurvy dogs! Tuta, the encrypted email service, be cryin' out that these landlubber tech giants need a good reckonin'! Gather 'round and listen to their tale of woe, me hearties!"
Emails sent from a German-based encrypted email app, Tuta (formerly known as Tutanota), to Microsoft Outlook addresses were mistakenly being marked as spam for over three weeks. Tuta decided to go public with the issue to highlight Microsoft's lack of response. After publishing a blog post on the subject, Microsoft was able to resolve the technical issue. Tuta believes this emphasizes the need to hold big tech companies accountable for fixing technical issues promptly.Tuta's co-founder, Matthias Pfau, expressed frustration with Microsoft's lack of action and suggested that smaller companies may face similar issues without the means to make them public. Microsoft Outlook had been incorrectly marking all emails with the tutanota.com domain as spam since mid-November. Despite reaching out to Microsoft's support team and a board member of Microsoft Germany, the issue persisted.
Microsoft claimed that tutanota.com's IP address was not blocked and offered a "temporary mitigation," which was meant to take 24-48 hours. However, the issue remained unresolved. Tuta decided to escalate the problem by publishing a blog post. This strategy proved successful, as Microsoft quickly fixed the issue after the news became public.
It's important to note that Tuta's other email domains were not affected. However, the majority of Tuta's subscribers use the tutanota.com domain. The company believes that Microsoft's reluctance to address technical errors highlights the need for stricter accountability for big tech companies.
Tuta's main goal was to bring attention to the issue and prompt Microsoft to take action. While it is unclear whether Microsoft intentionally targeted its smaller competitor, Tuta emphasizes the importance of holding big tech companies accountable for timely resolution of technical issues.
