Avast ye! Be ye accustomed to the never-endin' trickle o' Moment feature updates for Windows? Methinks a change be brewin' fer the comin' year, me hearties!
According to a well-known leaker, Microsoft may not be releasing Windows 12 after all. The next version of Windows, codenamed Hudson Valley, is said to be highly AI-focused and is planned for a launch in September or October 2024. However, sources inside Microsoft are doubtful that it will be called Windows 12. The concern is that another release with a different name would further fragment the user base. Instead, Microsoft may stick with another release of Windows 11 for the next incarnation. In addition to the potential change in the name of the operating system, there are also rumored changes to the way Windows updates are delivered. Currently, there are frequent smaller feature updates known as "Moment" updates, alongside an annual feature update. However, next year, Microsoft is planning to reduce the number of Moment updates and put more emphasis on the major annual update.
The danger of fragmentation arises if Windows 12 were to be released next year. This would result in users being spread across Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows 12, complicating the servicing and management process. A recent leak suggesting the arrival of Windows 11 24H2 adds weight to the speculation that Microsoft may stick with Windows 11 instead of introducing Windows 12.
While it is still possible that Windows 12 might be released, it is becoming less likely. Microsoft seems to be leaning towards maintaining a more unified user base and streamlining the update process by focusing on a major annual release.
