Arrr! Listen up, me hearties! Apple be givin' instructions on craftin' apps for Vision Pro and spatial reckonin'.

2023-12-08

Arr, me hearties, Apple be not commandin' ye scurvy dogs o' developers to plunge into the deep seas o' full immersion – not jus' yet, ye see. Take yer time, me mateys, and prepare yer wits afore ye plunge into the unknown!

In the language of a 17th-century pirate, if ye be wantin' to know what yer Apple Vision Pro experience be like, ye need to be lookin' at the upcoming apps. But alas, there be none yet. We be left to look to them developers, and even they be havin' questions about how to develop for this new fancy platform from Apple.
I asked a bunch o' developers if they be excited to be buildin' apps for the Vision Pro, and most said aye. Some even ventured to imagine what them app experiences might be like.
But we be a long way from the consumer release of this mixed-reality headset, and no one be truly understandin' how it be to play, communicate, explore, or work in it. The developers I spoke to be reminded of that fact. They be havin' no clear ideas on how to compute inside the Vision Pro or build applications for the visionOS platform.
Thankfully, Apple has answered some common questions from developers in a recent blog post. They be recommendin' that developers start slow and not fully immerse users right away. They also be advisin' developers to create a ground plane to connect their apps with the real world. Most of ye time, ye be usin' the Vision Pro in passthrough or mixed reality mode, so it be important to have a connection to the real floor.
Apple also wants developers to think about them key moments in their apps, those special experiences that make use of spatial computing. They be encouragin' developers to consider sound as well, usin' audio cues to help users recognize and confirm their actions.
Developin' for visionOS be more complex than yer regular app development. Ye be workin' in a 3D space and needin' to think about how users will be interactin' with elements in that space. The main content should be centered in the field of view for comfort.
So, while we may not fully understand the Vision Pro experience yet, Apple's guidance be bringin' things into focus. Arrr!
