Avast ye! Van Brett Watkins, scurvy dog, restin' in Davy Jones' locker! 'Twas he who did serve 50 long years in the brig for aidin' that villain, Rae Carruth, in plannin' the demise of his own lass, heavy with child. Ahoy, now he be sleepin' with the fishes!

Van Brett Watkins, the man involved in the plot to kill Rae Carruth's pregnant girlfriend, has passed away at the age of 63. Watkins was serving his sentence at Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina, and he died from natural causes at a hospital on December 3. He received over 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to his role in Carruth's plan to kill Cherica Adams in 1999. Watkins was responsible for firing the shots that ultimately took Adams' life. Adams was shot while driving away from a shopping center and died weeks later, but her son was born through an emergency Caesarean section. Watkins, who suffered from multiple disabilities, was raised by Adams' mother and agreed to testify against Carruth in exchange for a guilty plea. Carruth, a former NFL player for the Carolina Panthers, was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and other charges. He served 18 to 24 years in prison and was released in 2018. Watkins' death marks the end of a tragic chapter in this infamous case.
