Avast ye mateys! Dick Vitale be shoutin' from the rooftops of X, once known as Twitter, that he be free from the cursed disease! 'Tis his third scuffle with this treacherous foe in the past three years!
Legendary broadcaster Dick Vitale received a fantastic gift this holiday season - the news that he is cancer-free. In his usual humorous tone, Vitale took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the good news, exclaiming that "Santa Claus came early" for him and his family. He expressed his gratitude to his oncologist, Dr. Rick Brown, and Dr. Ken Meredith, who delivered the positive update after a clean PET scan and good bloodwork results. This announcement comes after Vitale's prolonged battle with vocal cord cancer, which forced him to take a break from broadcasting for several months. In October, he shared an update, revealing that his doctors found no evidence of cancer. Despite initially planning to return to the booth in late November, Vitale was advised by his doctors to take a longer break due to the toll the treatments had taken on his voice. While the cancer was gone, his voice still required more healing.
This recent victory marks Vitale's third battle with cancer since 2021. Last year, he underwent surgery for dysplasia in his vocal cords, which temporarily halted his broadcasting duties. Nonetheless, Vitale's illustrious career as a basketball commentator spans over four decades, earning him a place in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Before broadcasting, he coached at various institutions, including Rutgers and Detroit Mercy, before becoming the head coach of the Detroit Pistons.
While it remains uncertain when Vitale will make his return to the broadcasting booth, it seems likely that it will be sooner rather than later. His infectious enthusiasm and signature catchphrases have endeared him to fans, making his comeback eagerly anticipated.
