Google has added a new feature to its Contacts app on Android that allows users to see the real-time location of their friends and family. This feature has been in the works since May and is now available in the latest version of Google Contacts. The location-sharing banner is powered by Google Maps and can be found between the contact options and the Contact Info section. By tapping on the banner, users can instantly open the location of their contacts in Google Maps and get directions to them. Users can also receive notification alerts when their friends arrive at their location. To use this feature, users must have the other person's Gmail address saved in their Google Contacts app, and the person must be actively sharing their location on Google Maps. Once these criteria are met, the location-sharing banner will appear on the contact card.
Setting up location sharing is easy. Users can tap on their profile picture in Google Maps and select the Location Sharing option from the menu. From there, they can choose which contacts they want to share their real-time location with. There is an option to show the location temporarily with a time limit, but it is recommended to select "Until you turn this off" for continuous tracking.
The update may be rolling out in waves, so users should keep an eye out for the patch. TechRadar has also recommended the 10 best Android apps of 2023 according to Google, which users can check out.
