Walt McGrory, a former men’s college basketball player at Wisconsin, passed away at the age of 24 after battling bone cancer, according to a social media post by his family. McGrory played for the Badgers from 2017 to 2021 and had plans to transfer to South Dakota before being diagnosed with osteosarcoma. He documented his journey with the disease on his Instagram account.
Despite his struggles, McGrory maintained a positive attitude and believed in the power of healing. He aimed to inspire and support others going through similar challenges. His high school coach, Pat Dorsey, spoke highly of McGrory's resilience and recalled how he always kept a smile on his face.
Before attending Wisconsin, McGrory was a standout high school player in Edina, Minnesota, and set a school record of 2,216 career points. Instead of accepting scholarship offers, he chose to become a walk-on for the Badgers.
McGrory's passing is a loss for the basketball community, and his story serves as a reminder of the strength and determination individuals can possess in the face of adversity.
