2023-12-20

Arrr, it be a sad day me hearties! Nolan Patrick, that fine young buccaneer chosen second in the NHL Draft o' 2017, hath decided to hang up his skates at a tender age of 25. Aye, the seas of professional hockey shall miss his talent!

After suffering head injuries and dealing with a migraine condition, it appears that Nolan Patrick, a player in the National Hockey League (NHL), has retired from professional hockey. Patrick, who was the second overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, is only 25 years old.

There was debate at the time of the draft about whether Patrick should have been chosen first, but the New Jersey Devils selected Nico Hischier instead. Hischier is now the captain of the Devils.

News of Patrick's retirement started to circulate online when it was revealed that he had joined the coaching and mentorship program called "The Power Play," founded by Jayce Hawryluk, a professional player who currently competes in the Czech Republic. The program originally introduced Patrick as a "retired pro with significant NHL experience," but later changed it to "4X NHL Pro with significant experience."

Neither The Power Play nor the NHL immediately confirmed Patrick's retirement. Patrick spent four seasons with the Flyers before being traded to the Nashville Predators in 2021. However, he was quickly moved again to the Vegas Golden Knights, where he played 25 games during the 2021-22 season – his last appearance in the NHL.

In 2019, Patrick was diagnosed with a migraine disorder, a condition that seems to run in his family. His father, Steve Patrick, played 250 NHL games, and his uncle, James Patrick, had a 23-season career with the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, and Buffalo Sabres. Throughout his NHL career, Patrick played 197 games, scoring 30 goals and providing 40 assists.

As of now, it remains to be seen whether Patrick's retirement is official and if he will fully transition into a coaching role with The Power Play or explore other opportunities.
