Derrick Ward, a former Super Bowl champion running back with the New York Giants, is facing five second-degree robbery charges in Southern California. All five charges are felonies, and as of Thursday, Ward remains in custody. He was arrested in Los Angeles on Monday and booked into Valley Jail in Van Nuys with a bail set at $250,000. Ward is accused of using force to rob various businesses, including gas stations, across the city. TMZ reported the allegations.Ward, now 43 years old, was a seventh-round pick of the New York Jets in the 2004 draft but was cut by the team before he played a game. He later spent five years with the Giants and was part of a three-headed running back corps that included Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. The group was famously nicknamed "Earth, Wind, and Fire." In the 2007 season, Ward and his fellow running backs helped the Giants make it to the Super Bowl and upset the undefeated New England Patriots.
After his time with the Giants, Ward joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009 and played for the Houston Texans in 2010 and 2011 before retiring from the NFL in 2012.
Tiki Barber, Ward's former teammate, expressed his dismay over the arrest, stating that he believed Ward had turned his life around. Ward finished his career with 2,628 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.
