Avast, me hearties! A Yonkers lassies' roundball crew's skipper be walkin' the plank, and a scallywag be walkin' the shores, all due to a foul incident with a Jewish academy o'er a game. Shiver me timbers!
A high school girls basketball coach in Yonkers was fired and a player was kicked off the team after an antisemitic incident during a game against a Jewish high school. The game between the Leffell School and Roosevelt High School ended early when Roosevelt players hurled antisemitic slurs at their opponents, including "I support Hamas, you f---ing Jew." Referees and security guards had to intervene to break up the game, and some of the Leffell School players were escorted off the court. Yonkers Public Schools interim Superintendent Dr. Luis Rodriguez and Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano issued a joint statement apologizing for the comments made to the Leffell School team. They stated that hate speech would not be tolerated in the school district and that the antisemitic rhetoric was abhorrent and not in line with their values. According to a Leffell player, the game had a hostile environment from the start, with numerous jabs and comments directed at their team. Some players from Leffell were injured during the game due to Roosevelt's physical style of play. When the opposing team started shouting antisemitic slurs, the Leffell players walked off the court, and the game ended in a voluntary forfeit. Both teams lined up to shake hands at the premature end of the game, but the Leffell player expressed discomfort in having to shake hands with people who had expressed hatred. Roosevelt High's Athletic Director apologized to the Leffell Head of School, promising swift and appropriate action.
