Arrr, mateys! Thar be a yarn of scams surroundin' these precious GPUs, but the latest trickery be a true sight fer sore eyes!

Buyers of Nvidia’s RTX 4090 flagship GPU have fallen victim to scams in the past, and another case has recently been reported. A reader of Hong Kong-based HKEPC purchased a second-hand RTX 4090 from an online marketplace, only to discover that the graphics card was missing the GPU chip and some VRAM modules. The buyer was unable to contact the seller and reported the matter to the police, but no action could be taken. The buyer had paid 13,000 Hong Kong Dollars for the card, equivalent to around $1,700 in the US.
The moral of the story is that buyers should only purchase from trusted sellers and ideally from known retailers or auction sellers with good reputations. There are times when it's best to avoid the second-hand market altogether, such as during the burst of the crypto-mining bubble in 2022. Expensive graphics cards like the RTX 4090 are attractive targets for scammers due to their high price tags, even when sold second-hand. Previous incidents include a buyer receiving a box filled with metal instead of a graphics card.
While the buyer in this case reportedly received a refund, it is important for buyers to exercise caution and be aware of potential scams. The demand for the RTX 4090 has increased due to its ban in China and the rumored release of a new variant to circumvent those restrictions. It is advisable for buyers to be cautious and do their research before making high-end graphics card purchases.
