2024-01-15

Avast, me hearties! Word on the high seas be that a leak hath been sprung 'bout Microsoft's plans to unveil a fancy paid tier fer their AI assistant, CoPilot Pro. Arr, me ponder: what be the fate o' the poor ol' free tier, be it doomed to Davy Jones' locker?

Microsoft has integrated ChatGPT into its Copilot AI assistant for Edge, Bing, and Windows 11. However, a recent code leak suggests that the company may be planning to introduce a paid subscription tier called Copilot Pro. Currently, Copilot is free and provides access to the latest ChatGPT model, GPT-4 Turbo. But with the potential launch of Copilot Pro, Microsoft may introduce a pay wall upsell option similar to ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month.
The code references in Edge also hint at the features that may be included in a Copilot Pro subscription, such as access to the newest AI models, priority server access, and high-quality image generation. While a free Copilot tier is expected to remain available, the introduction of Copilot Pro suggests that Microsoft may reduce the number of free AI perks it offers.
Running an AI assistant like Copilot on the scale of Microsoft requires significant costs. Estimates suggest that the computer hardware costs for ChatGPT could be as high as $700,000 per day. To cover these expenses, ChatGPT introduced its Plus subscription in February 2023. Following a similar paid model, Microsoft Copilot Pro is likely to be launched soon.
Unfortunately, the introduction of Copilot Pro may result in a less capable free version of Copilot, which currently provides access to the latest ChatGPT models and Dall-E 3 image generation. However, it is hoped that some restrictions, such as the limit of 300 conversations per day, will be eased in the Pro version. The launch date for Copilot Pro is still unknown, but it is expected to be announced in the near future.
