The organization expressed their condolences and described Powell as a beloved father, brother, and son. Junior Galette, who was Powell's teammate at the University of Florida, also shared his sadness over the news.

Powell had a successful college career, playing for the Florida Gators from 2010 to 2013. He was highly regarded, earning the title of the number one prospect in high school, according to Rivals.

In the 2014 NFL Draft, Powell was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round. He played 14 games with the team during his rookie season, recording two tackles. However, he was released before the start of the 2015 season and placed on the Saints' injured reserve after going unclaimed.

Afterward, Powell joined the Chicago Bears' practice squad in 2016 and was later signed by the Seattle Seahawks. Despite these moves, he never played a game for either team.

In 2019, Powell signed with the Orlando Apollos but was waived before the Alliance of American Football ceased operations.
