Microsoft is rumored to release a major update called Windows 11 24H2 in September 2024. This information comes from reliable source Zac Bowden of Windows Central. The update is expected to include multiple features and foundational changes. It will heavily focus on next-gen AI experiences, particularly for AI-powered PCs. The update will be built on a new version of the Windows platform, bringing performance and security updates. One of the main features of the update will be upgrades for Copilot, Microsoft's desktop assistant. Copilot will enhance the Windows interface and improve productivity in apps and search. Microsoft is also planning a Copilot timeline/history feature, allowing users to easily locate previously opened files, images, and apps using AI-powered super-search.
Other upcoming features include an 'energy saver' capability and AI-powered Snap Layouts. Phone Link improvements are also expected, such as using a smartphone as a webcam for the PC.
There is speculation that this update could be Windows 12 or a next-gen version of Windows, given the extensive changes and the new platform called Germanium. However, Bowden believes it will still be considered the 24H2 update for Windows 11. Microsoft may want to avoid fragmenting the user base into multiple versions of Windows. Windows 10 is still receiving new features, including Copilot functionality.
The projected release for the 24H2 update is September 2024, but the platform it's built on, Germanium, will be ready in April. New AI PCs with 24H2 may appear as early as July, but the upgrade won't be available for existing Windows 11 installations until September at the earliest.
