Arrr, ye scurvy dogs at Meta be claimin' they be workin' on a clever trick to let ye Quest owners use yer headwear on a flimsy ol' plane – just like them fancy Apple's Vision Pro! Aye, they be settin' sail on the same sea, seekin' the same treasure, they be!
Apple is set to launch its VR headset, and it may include a feature that allows users to use the device while traveling in a car or on a plane. The reveal trailer showed a person using the headset on a plane, which would provide a more immersive experience compared to traditional in-flight entertainment. However, it is currently challenging to use VR headsets while traveling due to the movement of the vehicle throwing off the headset's motion sensors. Meta, the VR giant, is working on a solution to this problem, according to Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth. In a previous demo, Meta showed a Meta Quest Pro being used in a BMW, with the car's sensors keeping the headset's motion sensors in check. However, this solution would not work for low-tech vehicles or commercial planes. Another option could be to introduce a simplified travel mode that turns off the motion sensors and uses scaled-back tracking data for static experiences like watching videos or playing games. Apple's VR headset may provide a solution to using headsets while traveling, and Meta is actively working on a solution as well.
Overall, it remains to be seen what Meta comes up with, but with Apple's offering and the assurance that a solution is being worked on, it is hopeful that VR headsets like Meta Quest will be usable on planes and in cars in the near future.
