Arr, ye scallywag be doomed to rot in a cursed medical brig for e'er, havin' gutted two young scholars 'n a humble swabbie in ol' Nottingham, England.
A 32-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia, Valdo Calocane, has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a high-security medical facility after he fatally stabbed two college students and a man just months away from retirement in Nottingham, England. The sentencing followed three days of hearings in which family members of the victims condemned Calocane as "evil." The verdict and the whole legal process were slammed by bereaved families, who argued that Calocane should have been tried for murder instead of manslaughter due to his mental illness. Doctors argued that Calocane believed he was being controlled by external influences and that his family was in danger if he didn't obey the voices in his head. Prosecutors concluded that he could forward a defense for manslaughter based on diminished responsibility. In his sentencing, Judge Mark Turner described Calocane's crimes as "sickening" and stated that he would most probably spend the rest of his life detained in a high-security hospital rather than prison. Calocane had stabbed the students and the school caretaker, stole the caretaker's van, and ran down three people in the streets before being stopped by police. Prosecutors accepted his guilty plea to manslaughter and he also admitted to three counts of attempted murder. The families of the victims criticized the police and prosecutors for their handling of the case and felt that justice was not served.
