Yarrr! Landlubber Brad Bohannon, the scurvy knave who used to lead the Alabama baseball crew, be cursed with a 15-year exile from the NCAA! 'Tis been proven that he shared secret tidbits with a sports bettin' scoundrel, arrr!
The NCAA has imposed a 15-year coaching ban on former Alabama Crimson Tide head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for violating the association's wagering and ethical conduct rules. Bohannon was found to have provided insider information to an individual engaged in betting on an Alabama baseball game. The individual in question was Bert Eugene Neff Jr., an Indiana businessman. Bohannon was fired by Alabama in May 2023 after an investigation into suspicious betting activity related to the team's game against LSU. The NCAA found that Bohannon had used an encrypted messaging app to communicate with Neff and had provided him with inside information for sports betting. Bohannon had even informed Neff about the starting lineup before telling the opposing team. Neff tried to place a $100,000 wager on the Alabama game but was limited to only $15,000 due to suspicious activity. Following the betting scandal, both Bohannon and Neff were banned from Ohio sportsbooks. The NCAA stated that the integrity of games is of utmost importance and expressed deep concern over Bohannon's unethical behavior. Alabama received Level I-mitigated penalties, while Bohannon received Level I-aggravated penalties, including a 15-year show-cause order and a suspension for 100% of the baseball regular season for the first five seasons of his employment if he is employed during the ban. Alabama also received three years of probation and a $5,000 fine and is required to provide gambling education to student-athletes, coaches, and staff. The penalties cannot be appealed since they were agreed upon through the negotiated resolution process.
