Arr, ye scurvy dogs! Meta shall label the pictures created by third-party generative AIs and shall demand ye landlubbers to label the AI videos on their platforms. Hoist the Jolly Roger and get to work, ye scallywags!
Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook and Instagram, will begin flagging AI-generated images on its platforms in an effort to promote transparency. Already, content made by Meta's Imagine AI engine is labeled with a visible watermark. Now, pictures from third-party sources like OpenAI and Google will also be labeled, although the exact design is not yet known. Meta is also working on tools to detect invisible markers in AI-generated images, similar to what Imagine AI does with embedded watermarks in metadata. However, the challenge lies in detecting AI-generated audio and video. Meta admits that it currently can't detect these forms of media at the same level as images, but it is working towards that capability. In the meantime, users will be required to disclose if their audio or video content is produced or edited by AI, with penalties for non-disclosure. If a piece of media is highly realistic and risks tricking the public, Meta will attach a more prominent label to provide important details.
Meta is also improving its first-party tools, with its AI Research lab FAIR developing a new type of watermarking tech called Stable Signature to prevent the removal of invisible markers. Additionally, Meta is training its AI models on Community Standards to identify policy violations in content.
The social media labels will be rolled out in the coming months, particularly in anticipation of the 2024 major election year. Meta aims to combat misinformation on its platforms. Details on penalties for non-disclosure and watermarking of third-party images have yet to be revealed. Overall, Meta's efforts are focused on promoting transparency and mitigating the spread of misinformation.
For more information on the penalties and watermarking, we will update the story when available. In the meantime, you can check out TechRadar's list of the best AI image generators for 2024.
