Google has rebranded its Bard AI bot as Gemini and released an Android app in the US. However, the app has come with some frustrations for users, and Google is now working to fix the major issues. Despite lacking many basic digital assistant features, Gemini can be used as a replacement for Google Assistant on Android phones. One issue that has been resolved is the need to manually tap on the 'send' arrow when chatting with Gemini using voice. The app will now recognize when the user has stopped talking and respond accordingly, making it more intuitive to use.
Google Gemini team member Jack Krawczyk has shared a list of features that engineers are currently working on, including the ability to interact with Google Calendar and reminders. The team is also developing a coding interpreter so that Gemini can produce and emulate programming code within the app. They are also aiming to remove some of the "preachy guardrails" that the AI bot currently has.
A top priority for the team is to address refusals, where Gemini declines to complete a task or answer a question. The app will soon be available in more countries, including Europe, and users are encouraged to provide feedback to the Google team.
