2024-02-16

Avast ye scurvy dogs! The creators of content be havin' a grand time mixin' their most beloved artists with their videos! Arrr, whilst TikTok be swabbin' the decks, lamentin' a recent loss.

YouTube is updating its Remix feature on YouTube Shorts to allow users to incorporate their favorite music videos into their content. The update includes four tools: Sound, Collab, Green Screen, and Cut. Sound allows users to use a track from a video as background audio. Collab places a Short next to an artist's content for users to dance alongside or copy the choreography. Green Screen turns a music video into the background of a Short. Cut allows creators to remove a five-second portion of the original source and add it to their own content.

Although these features are not new to the platform, they are now being rolled out to all users. The update is being released incrementally, and the steps to implement the remix features are the same across the board. Users can choose the music video they want to use, select the remix tool, highlight the desired portion, and record the Short with the music playing in the background.

The expansion of the Remix feature comes at an interesting time as rival TikTok recently lost access to Universal Music Group's music catalog. YouTube, on the other hand, has been working with UMG to ensure proper compensation for AI music. This collaboration allows creators on YouTube to safely use songs from the label. However, future negotiations between the two entities may affect this relationship.

To create YouTube Shorts, users will need a smartphone with a good camera. The article also includes a section with related articles and suggests checking out TechRadar's list of the best iPhones for recommendations.
