Apple recently announced a slew of new accessibility features for their devices ahead of Global Accessibility Day on May 16, 2024. These features, including Eye Tracking, Music Haptics, Vocal Shortcuts, and Vehicle Motion Cues, are set to be released with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, VisionOS 2, and the next version of macOS. Eye tracking, in particular, stood out as a way to control the iPhone and iPad using just your eyes, thanks to the front-facing camera and machine learning technology.
Vocal Shortcuts and Music Haptics are aimed at users with speech-related disabilities and hearing impairments, respectively. Live Captions on Vision Pro will provide captions for spoken dialogue in real-time, enhancing accessibility for users who are deaf or hard of hearing. The release of these features is expected later this year and will likely coincide with the release of new operating system versions.
Apple's commitment to accessibility through innovative features powered by AI and machine learning is evident in these new additions. With the upcoming WWDC 2024, we can anticipate more insights from Apple on how technology can continue to impact accessibility for all users.
