Avast ye hearties! Gather round as I spin ye a yarn of a grand pirate o’ the diamond, the one and only Luis Tiant, known to the swabs of baseball as "El Tiante." This fine buccaneer of the Boston Red Sox has sailed to Davy Jones’ locker at the ripe age of 83. A three-time All-Star and a master of the mound, Tiant’s career spanned nigh 19 seasons, during which he struck fear into the hearts of batters with his 2,416 strikeouts!El Tiante first set sail with the Cleveland Indians in the year of our Lord, 1964. He soon made his mark, leading the American League with a fearsome 1.60 ERA in 1968, and earned his first All-Star title. He joined the Red Sox crew in 1971, swashbuckling his way to two more All-Star nods and a top spot with a 1.91 ERA in 1972. Even the Yankees, Pirates, and Angels felt the sting of his cannon-like arm before he hung up his cleats in 1982.
With a heart of gold and a spirit like the wind, Tiant was beloved by many. Fellow matey Fred Lynn bid farewell, declaring him a “big game pitcher” and a true friend. So raise yer tankards high for Luis Tiant, a legend who will be missed on the high seas of baseball! Arrr!
