The upcoming street race in Chicago is historic for NASCAR as it will be the first in the Cup Series to take place through the city's downtown streets. Originally conceived as a virtual race in March 2021, as part of the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series, rumors began circulating that NASCAR intended to transform the virtual track into a real-life race. The official announcement confirming the race's inclusion in the Cup Series was made on July 19, 2022.
