Arr, ye scurvy dogs be stealin' a mighty haul o' doubloons, aye, bilin's o' greenbacks, each year with yer robocall tricks! But this fine gent, vexed by yer ceaseless callin', hath crafted an AI to keep ye scallywags chattin' till dawn. Aye, a pirate's revenge be comin' for ye!
Roger Anderson, founder of the Jolly Roger Telephone Company, has created an artificial intelligence call-deflection system to combat unwanted robocalls and telephone fraud. The system uses a ChatGPT-powered personality to keep fraudsters talking in circles and prevent them from extracting financial information from a chatbot. Anderson acknowledges that his solution is "incredibly silly," but believes it is the only way to tackle the issue of unsolicited telemarketing. Unwanted robocalls are the top complaint received by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), with Americans receiving approximately 4 billion robocalls per month. According to Truecaller, phone scams in America resulted in nearly $40 billion in losses between May 2021 and May 2022. Anderson compares the struggle to stop telemarketing and scams to stopping spam letters, stating that telecommunications is similar because the content cannot be easily filtered. The Jolly Roger Telephone Company intercepts the calls and uses AI tools, such as ChatGPT, to engage the scammers and keep them busy. Anderson hopes that his AI tool not only provides a sense of revenge and protection, but also saves Americans money and restores trust in answering the phone. The FCC estimates that reducing fraud and nuisance from illegal robocalls could save Americans over $13.5 billion per year. Anderson's AI tool, with personalities like Whitey Whitebeard, Salty Sally, and Whiskey Jack, aims to jam up fraudsters' operations and prevent them from calling other people down the line.
