Arr, ye scurvy dog! If ye be wishin' to delete yer Threads account, ye must also be partin' ways with yer Instagram, so 'tis said. Aye, 'tis a cruel fate, but such be the way o' the digital seas, matey!
Threads, the new social media app launched by Instagram, has gained a massive audience within hours of its release. With 10 million signups in just seven hours, it's clear that people are eager to try out this new platform. The convenience of being able to create a Threads account using your existing Instagram account has made it even easier for users to get started. However, there is a major drawback to joining Threads. When you link your Instagram account to Threads, you also link your entire Instagram account. This means that if you decide to delete your Threads account, you will have to delete your Instagram account as well. Twitter user Emily Hughes shared her own experience with this issue, sparking further discussion.
Meta's Supplemental Privacy Policy confirms this requirement, stating that Threads profiles can only be deleted by deleting the associated Instagram account. Despite this drawback, Instagram has a vast user base of 2 billion users to leverage in order to promote Threads and potentially challenge Twitter's dominance in the social media space.
In contrast, Twitter has been making questionable decisions and policy changes under the guidance of Elon Musk. Recent gaffes include daily rate limits on the number of tweets users can view and a login requirement for viewing tweets. Musk eventually reversed the latter decision, but the damage was already done.
Musk's comments on Twitter also indicate his skepticism towards Instagram and Meta's success. It remains to be seen how Threads will fare against Twitter and how Musk will respond. Will Meta's app truly become a "Twitter-killer," or will Musk find a way to counter its impact?
