Arrr, me hearties! Yonder tech scoundrels, who be havin' the skill to spy when scrawls be churned out by artificial intelligence, be gainin' popularity since the launch of ChatGPT!
Companies that develop software to detect if artificial intelligence or humans authored an essay or other written assignment are experiencing a surge in demand due to the success of ChatGPT. ChatGPT, which quickly gained 100 million monthly users, has become popular among younger generations, including students. However, surveys have revealed that while 30% of college students admit to using ChatGPT for school assignments, half of them consider it cheating. This wild success of ChatGPT has also benefited AI detection companies like Winston AI and Turnitin, as teachers and employers seek ways to identify computer-generated materials submitted as human work. Winston AI, which claims to have 99% accuracy in detecting AI content, provides users with a scale indicating the likelihood that a piece of writing was generated by a human or AI.
John Renaud, co-founder of Winston AI, admits he was initially worried about ChatGPT but believes AI materials will always have "tells" that detection systems can identify. Renaud explains that AI-generated materials have patterns such as "perplexity" and "burstiness" that distinguish them from human-generated content.
Similarly, Annie Chechitelli, chief product officer of Turnitin, argues that AI materials can be easily detected and that technology will continue to evolve to expose AI-generated work. Turnitin has already flagged over 1.3 million academic submissions as likely being written by AI.
While some colleges have embraced AI technology, implementing it into classrooms for teaching and coursework, others are taking steps to prevent cheating via AI. College students have reported that professors are increasingly threatening to fail them if caught using AI, and preventing cheating has become a top instructional challenge for teachers.
Overall, AI detection companies are capitalizing on the success of ChatGPT and the growing concern about cheating through AI-generated materials. With the continuous development of detection technology, it seems unlikely that AI materials will become undetectable in the near future.
