Former New York Giants head coach, Pat Shurmur, is reportedly making his return to college football as he joins Deion Sanders' coaching staff at Colorado. Shurmur did not coach in 2022 after leaving the Denver Broncos, where he served as offensive coordinator for two years. During his time as Giants head coach, Shurmur had a record of 9-23 over two seasons. He brings over 20 years of NFL coaching experience to the Buffaloes' staff. It was reported that Shurmur was on the Colorado campus earlier this week, and his addition to the coaching staff is expected to bring valuable expertise to the team. Mike Zimmer, former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, is also part of Sanders' coaching staff.
With Shurmur as the playcaller in Denver, the Broncos averaged just 20.2 points per game. However, he did receive recognition as the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2017 when he was the offensive coordinator for the Vikings. In addition to his NFL experience, Shurmur has previous college football coaching experience at Michigan State and Stanford.
Deion Sanders, who achieved a 27-5 record in three seasons at Jackson State, has taken on the task of turning around the struggling Colorado football program. Sanders has already made significant changes to the roster, with 18 players entering the transfer portal. His arrival has generated excitement among the Colorado fan base, as demonstrated by the high attendance at the Buffaloes' spring game.
It is worth noting that Sanders recently underwent surgery to remove blood clots in his legs, but he is now on the road to recovery.
