Arrr, mateys! Seattle Storm's guard, Sami Whitcomb, caused a stir on Saturday when the gum she was chewin' slipped out o' her mouth betwixt her marvelous three-pointers. 'Twas a sight that made many a brow arch in astonishment!
Seattle Storm guard Sami Whitcomb was the star of the game against the New York Liberty, scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds. But it was her strange gum incident that caught everyone's attention. With just under three minutes remaining in the game, Whitcomb made a 25-foot three-pointer to reduce the deficit to seven points. As she celebrated, her gum fell out of her mouth and onto the floor. Without missing a beat, Whitcomb picked up the gum and put it back in her mouth before running back down the court to play defense. The Liberty's Breanna Stewart then missed a three-pointer, which was recovered by Whitcomb's teammate Ezi Magbegor. Whitcomb took advantage of the turnover and made another three-pointer, bringing the deficit to just four points. The ESPN broadcast captured the gum incident, and commentator Rebecca Lobo found humor in the situation, calling the gum "lucky." Ryan Ruocco, her co-commentator, was both disturbed and impressed by Whitcomb's actions.
Unfortunately for Whitcomb and the Storm, the Liberty managed to hold on to their lead and win the game 80-76. The Liberty improved their season record to 13-4, while the Storm's record fell to 4-14. Despite the loss, Whitcomb's gum mishap provided a lighthearted moment in an otherwise intense game.
