Four members of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department were honored at the Southeastern Conference Media Days for their response to the Covenant School shooting in March. Commissioner Greg Sankey praised the officers for their quick and heroic action in engaging with the shooter, who was eventually gunned down. Sankey expressed his condolences for the loss of six innocent lives and emphasized that the situation could have been worse if not for the police department's intervention.Detective Ryan Cagle, Sgt. Jeffrey Mathes, Detective Zachary Plese, and Detective Michael Collazo were recognized and applauded during the event. Sankey also announced that they would be honored guests at the 2024 SEC men's basketball tournament. The shooting took place at a Tennessee private Christian grade school, where an armed shooter entered with two assault-type rifles and a handgun. The shooter, who identified as a transgender woman, was eventually stopped by the police on the second floor of the building. The incident left three students and three adults dead.
