A Mexican politician, Javier Borrego, is calling for legislation to punish those who mock disabled individuals after he was ridiculed for a wardrobe malfunction during a public speaking event. Borrego, a member of the left-wing National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) party, expressed his frustration with the media in his state for bullying him and causing shame to his family and loved ones. He emphasized the need to respect disabled individuals, particularly when their families are involved. Borrego explained that his pants had dropped to his ankles during the event due to a necessary surgical procedure he had undergone for a spinal condition, which resulted in him losing weight and wearing ill-fitting clothing. In response to the incident, Borrego intends to introduce a guarantee to sanction anyone mocking the disabled to prevent similar embarrassments from occurring. He also mentioned that fellow senators have given him suspenders to prevent future mishaps. The timing of the incident couldn't have been worse, as Borrego's speech was part of his party's election campaign launch for the "National Project 2024-2030." This election season is crucial for Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's MORENA party as they aim to maintain control ahead of the upcoming transition of power. MORENA currently controls two-thirds of all regional governments in Mexico, demonstrating significant support for Obrador's party. Despite the opposition party PRI's efforts to regain control, MORENA secured a victory in the State of Mexico's gubernatorial race, signaling the erosion of PRI's long-standing rule and the corruption associated with it. As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Mexico City's mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, is expected to be MORENA's candidate, followed closely by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, both closely aligned with Obrador's policies.
