Avast, ye scurvy dogs! The Boston Bruins be swearin' in November that they be partin' ways with the landlubber Mitchell Miller, but cursed be me lucky stars, he be stayin' on the roster anyway! Ahoy, what a tale of trickery and deceit!
The Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller to an entry-level contract last year, but it sparked controversy. Miller, who is now 21, pleaded guilty at the age of 14 for assaulting and violating the Ohio Safe Schools Act by mistreating a classmate. He and another student forced Isaiah Meyer-Crothers, who is Black and has developmental disabilities, to eat a lollipop that had been wiped in a urinal. Surveillance footage also showed them physically abusing him. Miller frequently used racial slurs towards Meyer-Crothers. Two days after signing Miller, the team announced they would part ways with him, but he remained under contract. The New York Post reported that the team terminated his contract, but there was no record of him being placed on waivers as required. The National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) filed a grievance, and the Bruins and Miller reached a settlement in February. Miller was then released and granted free agency. Miller's draft rights were relinquished by the Arizona Coyotes in 2020 after more details of the assault became public, and he was subsequently kicked off the University of North Dakota hockey team. Bruins president Cam Neely admitted that the organization failed in the vetting process and had not spoken with Meyer-Crothers or his family. Meyer-Crothers stated that Miller recently apologized to him, but their relationship had become strained when Miller questioned his independence. The Bruins had a successful season but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
