Michael Phelps, the legendary swimmer with 23 gold medals, had his final individual world record shattered by 21-year-old Leon Marchand of France at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships. Phelps held the record for the 400-meter individual medley at 4.03.84, which he set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he won eight gold medals and broke seven world records. Marchand finished the race in 4.02.50, edging out Phelps' record and winning the gold in Fukuoka, Japan. Marchand described the race as one of the most painful things he has ever done, but also amazing and crazy.Phelps graciously accepted the defeat and was seen at the winner's podium, holding up Marchand's hand in victory. He expressed his excitement and admiration for Marchand's swim. Despite the loss, Phelps was proud of his own accomplishments and showed his support for the young swimmer. Marchand and Phelps share a connection as they both trained with Bob Bowman, who coached Phelps during his career.
The United States' Carson Foster took the silver medal in the race, while Japan's Daiya Seto won bronze, much to the delight of the home crowd. Marchand, a rising star in swimming, had previously qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and set France's record for the 400-meter individual medley.
Although Marchand finished sixth in the event at the Olympics, he exceeded his previous personal best and also participated in other swimming events. This victory over Phelps' record solidifies Marchand's position as a talented and promising swimmer.
