Arrr, me hearties! Ol' Phil Mickelson be swearin' he didn't wager on the 2012 Ryder Cup, where he fought alongside his mateys. But young Rory McIlroy beclaimin' that this here lefty scallywag might just be plannin' to bet on this year's jolly tournament. Yo ho ho!
Rory McIlroy has been openly critical of Phil Mickelson and his decision to join the new golf league, LIV Golf. Despite the merger deal between the PGA and the Public Investment Fund, and Mickelson's move to LIV being over a year old, McIlroy continues to take jabs at him. Recently, it was revealed that Mickelson has allegedly wagered over $1 billion on sports over the last 30 years. In a new memoir on Mickelson, it is claimed that he asked his associate to place a $400,000 bet on the U.S. team to win the Ryder Cup in 2012. The U.S. ended up losing in what is now known as the "Miracle at Medinah." Mickelson participated in 12 Ryder Cups between 1995 and 2018 but did not make the team in 2021, despite winning the PGA Championship that year.
McIlroy humorously suggested that Mickelson could bet on the Ryder Cup this year since he won't be a part of it. Author Billy Walters claimed that Mickelson called him to make a bet on the U.S. team for the Ryder Cup, but Mickelson later denied this claim, stating that he never bets on the Ryder Cup and would never undermine the integrity of the game.
According to Walters, Mickelson's gambling losses are estimated to be around $100 million. He made thousands of bets and was known to bet large amounts on sports games. Mickelson admitted to his gambling being reckless and embarrassing in a 2022 interview, but he stated that he has been addressing it through therapy and feels comfortable with where he is now.
McIlroy, on the other hand, has been named a member of Team Europe for the upcoming Ryder Cup. This will be his seventh Ryder Cup after playing in each one since 2010.
