Avast ye! Microsoft be pullin' the plug on Cortana, leavin' Windows 11 without a trusty digital assistant, arr!

In a move that was promised earlier this year, Microsoft has officially scrapped Cortana in Windows 11. The announcement was made in June, with a firm date of August for the digital assistant to be discontinued. Reports of users seeing Cortana being removed started surfacing a week ago. Now, it seems Microsoft is fully pulling support for Cortana, with Windows Central confirming that the deprecation is underway.
For most users, saying goodbye to Cortana won't be a big loss as it wasn't used much on Windows 11. Microsoft had already shifted the focus of Cortana towards business use. However, Cortana will also be removed from Microsoft Teams later this year, leaving only Outlook mobile with the digital assistant by the end of 2023.
The reason behind getting rid of Cortana is the upcoming Windows Copilot AI, which is a more ambitious desktop assistant. It will be integrated into Windows 11 as a side panel with additional abilities to customize Windows settings. It aims to make it easier for users to access options that may be buried deep within submenus. Although Copilot is already available in test builds of Windows 11, it is still in its early stages and lacks advanced features.
Rumors suggest that Copilot could debut in Windows 11 23H2, and clearing out Cortana before then would make sense. However, there are doubts about whether Copilot will be impressive enough to launch in just a few months. Nevertheless, Microsoft seems determined to move forward with its plans for a more advanced desktop assistant.
