Arrr, me hearties! Avast ye! Be ye aware that Google Chrome be wieldin' a mighty AI power to summarize vast tomes for ye landlubbers. Arrr, but what be the consequence for the humble bloggers and scribblers?
Google is introducing a new feature to its Search Generative Experience (SGE) that will summarize articles for users. This feature, called "SGE while browsing," will be rolled out next week as an early experiment within the opt-in Search Labs program. It will be available on mobile before the Chrome browser on desktop. The feature will display a pop-up as users scroll through a blog or article, highlighting what Google's tool considers the key points of the page. Users can click on a highlighted point to be taken to the corresponding paragraph in the article. However, this feature will only work on articles that are freely available on the web and not behind a paywall. In addition to the article summarization feature, the SGE will also introduce other smaller features, such as the ability to hover over certain words and see definitions or diagrams, mainly for scientific, economic, or historical topics.
While this feature may be helpful for users seeking concise information quickly, it may be concerning for content creators. If users rely solely on the generated summaries, they may miss out on important context or information. This could be particularly problematic for sensitive or serious topics where crucial details may be left out. Content creators may not be happy with this change, but Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, has stated that this is how Search will work in the future.
