Arrr! The Tampa Bay Buccaneers be dreadin' the worst for their matey, Russell Gage, a fine wide receiver. While practicin' with the New York Jets, he was carted off the field. May the winds of fortune be on his side, or else the Buccaneers be curs'd!
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage has suffered a non-contact knee injury during a joint practice with the New York Jets, putting an end to his 2023 season before it even began. Gage was seen being carted off the field and was unable to put weight on his leg. Although Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles did not definitively confirm that Gage would miss the season, he expressed doubt that there would be a positive update.Bowles stated that it appeared to be a serious injury, and Gage had been battling back from various injuries since his time with the team. The extent of the injury is not yet known, but the Buccaneers are preparing for the worst. Gage had a challenging 2022 season, dealing with injuries such as a hamstring injury that caused him to miss three games, as well as a neck injury and concussion during a playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Despite his injury history, Gage signed a new contract with the Buccaneers last year, albeit with a pay cut. With Gage out, the team will need to find a new starting slot receiver. Deven Thompkins is a potential replacement, but the passing game will still heavily rely on Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
In his first season with the Buccaneers, Gage had 426 receiving yards on 51 receptions in 13 games. In his previous four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, he recorded a total of 2,065 yards and nine touchdowns. The Buccaneers will now have to adjust their plans for the upcoming season without Gage on the field.
