When asked to summarize what has been happening in college football, Swarbrick simply replied, "A complete disaster." Swarbrick also admitted that he did not have a clear answer as to how college football got into its current situation, but he emphasized that everyone in the industry, including himself, must take responsibility for it.The Pac-12 conference has been particularly affected by the recent changes in college athletics. It lost five teams to the Big Ten and Big 12, in addition to the departures of Colorado, USC, and UCLA. Now, only Washington State, Oregon State, Stanford, and California remain in the conference, and finding a new conference for Stanford and Cal has become a top priority for Swarbrick.
One possibility being considered is for Stanford and Cal to join the ACC, where Notre Dame already has a significant presence. Swarbrick acknowledged that conference realignment has been driven by financial considerations, although he disagreed with describing it as greed. He recognized that the demands for increased revenue have pushed institutions to make these moves.
