Gaines responded on social media, stating she would take legal action against PinkNews for defamation and lying. She expressed concern about personal threats to her safety and criticized news outlets for inciting violence with misleading headlines. Gaines, the director of the Riley Gaines Center at the Leadership Institute, has previously shared her discomfort with having to change in the same locker room as a transgender swimmer. She clarified that her stance is pro-woman and pro-fairness, not anti-trans. Gaines encourages everyone to participate in sports regardless of their identity.
