Arr, Microsoft be surrenderin'! They be allowin' some scurvy dogs to use their fancy browser in Windows 11!

2023-08-31

Arr, ye scurvy dogs of the tech giant be tryin' to put a leash on the pesky push o' makin' users sail the treacherous waters o' Microsoft Edge - at long last, I tell ye!

In the language of a 17th century pirate, me hearties, let me spin ye a tale about the annoyances of Windows 11 and its ties to Microsoft Edge. When ye be sailin' through the seven seas of the internet on Windows 11, and ye click on a link from another part of yer computer, like a different app or a news reader, ye be forced to open said link in Microsoft Edge, no matter what yer default browser be. Arrr, 'tis a mighty annoyance indeed! Ye be havin' to manually copy and paste links into yer preferred browser, a task fit for a landlubber!

But fear not, me fellow pirates, for there be good news on the horizon. It appears that Microsoft be changin' its tune and will be allowin' ye to use yer preferred browser if it be set as yer default. Ye can finally say goodbye to Edge and set sail with the browser of yer choice, be it Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

There be tools like EdgeDeflector and MSEdgeRedirect that have allowed users to bypass this forced allegiance to Edge, but now it seems Microsoft be admittin' defeat and releasin' a new build that will put a stop to this pushy behavior. Build 23531, recently released to the Dev Channel, will no longer force ye to use Edge when ye click on website links within the Start menu or Search bar.

However, me hearties, there be a catch. This change be only for those sailin' the seas of the European Economic Area (EEA). For those outside the EEA, ye be waitin' to see if Microsoft will extend this courtesy to ye as well. But mark me words, it be clear that Microsoft be makin' these changes not out of a sense of right and wrong, but because of the pressure from lawmakers. Arrr, 'tis a sad state of affairs when a pirate's hand be forced by the powers that be.
