Avast ye! Virginia State didst shock Norfolk State on Saturday, but alas! A last-second spectacle nearly scuttled the Trojans' victory. Methinks their triumph hung by a thread!
Division II Virginia State and Norfolk State had a thrilling season opener that ended in a bizarre and humorous fashion. With just 6 seconds left on the clock, Virginia State was on a 4th-and-7, trying to end the game by taking a safety. However, instead of doing so, Jordan Davis decided to run the ball out of bounds, thinking the game was over.Virginia State started celebrating, but officials ruled that Davis had run out of bounds with 1 second remaining. This gave Norfolk State a chance to tie the game. The Spartans lined up for a potential game-tying kick, but the snap was botched.
Trojans defender Dante Clark seized the opportunity and picked up the fumble, running it all the way back for a touchdown. This officially put the game away and Virginia State won 33-24.
Aside from the humorous ending, the game showcased some impressive performances. Trojans running back Upton Bailey rushed for 184 yards and a touchdown, while Kymani Clark also had a rushing touchdown. Quarterback Steve Williams had a solid game, going 13-for-19 with 133 passing yards and a touchdown pass. He also scored a rushing touchdown.
Looking ahead, Virginia State, coming off a 6-4 season last year, will face Tusculum University in their next game. Norfolk State, who had a rough 2-9 season previously, will hit the road to take on Hampton University.
All in all, this unusual and entertaining game provided plenty of excitement for both teams and their fans.
