Popular VPN service NordVPN has announced its first experimental project, Sonar, a browser extension designed to protect users from phishing attacks and cybercrime using AI technology. Users can register on NordLabs' waiting list to test the beta version and provide feedback. Nord Security's head of product strategy, Vykintas Maknickas, stated that Sonar aims to combat the automation of phishing attacks with AI tools. The extension is based on the large language model (LLM) system used by ChatGPT, another popular service. Maknickas explained that the idea for Sonar came from an internal chat group where employees shared suspicious emails. The extension requires users to initiate it and open suspicious emails for scanning. Sonar can detect patterns that traditional phishing detectors cannot comprehend. It also educates users on why emails are flagged as phishing and what signs to look out for in the future. Nord prioritizes user data privacy and ensures that Sonar is not trained on user inputs but on publicly viable phishing emails. The extension is currently available for Gmail users on Google Chrome, with plans to expand to other platforms. Depending on the testing phase, Nord may integrate Sonar into existing products or release it as a standalone tool. NordLabs welcomes users to test Sonar and provide feedback to help improve internet safety. Users can sign up on the waiting list to access Sonar and future experimental projects, including Pixray, an AI-enabled tool for distinguishing AI-generated images.
